Today’s another snow day, but there’s no work for me at the diner. I spend my morning making sure I’m up to date on school assignments and cooking a batch of meals for the freezer using some nearly bad veg I picked up for nine cents. There is every chance Betty and I will immediately die from extreme food poisoning, thanks to my heavily improvized recipes, but it’s the thought that counts. [That’s a valid defense against manslaughter charges, right?]

Then, because I have been tasked with handling the PR for the End Revenge Porn Rally [yes, the PR for the ERPR – try saying that without setting your mouth on fire], I get to work emailing every single one of the local and national journalists who reached out to me at the height of the scandal. Back then, I ignored every single request for comment that landed in my inbox, but now my job is to recapture their attention. To pique their interest once more.

Instead of sending a blanket email to the hundreds of contacts I have in my account, I take the time to research each one, look into the kind of story they cover, and tailor my approach accordingly. I include some personal insights from the scandal to lure them in, laying it on thick with the emotional angle [easier when typing than talking, it turns out], then go in for the kill and explain how we hope to turn the horrific story of what happened to me into actual political change. It’s time-consuming, but I get into a good rhythm, and come late afternoon I’ve replied to over half of the journalists in my inbox.

By the time I head over to Ajita’s I feel like I deserve the break. Studying for midterms can wait. I’m beat.

Meg is already chilling in the basement by the time I get there, which means I can’t talk to Ajita about her romantic feelings, and somehow it doesn’t seem like the kinda thing I can just text her about. Like: “Hey, dude, quick question, I know we’ve barely acknowledged the fact you’re gay, but are you in love with Meg?” No. Even I have more tact than that. Most of the time.

Plus, I’m not sure I should even address it with Ajita at all. It took her an eternity to tell me about Carlie, and even then it was only because I accidentally found out through inadvertent laptop snooping. And, y’know, accidentally told Carson, who had his phone hacked, by a person who very deliberately revealed this info to the entire world. When that came out Ajita denied the rumors to everyone except me. Her family and tight-knit Hindu community still have zero idea.

Ajita and I have barely discussed it since. Up until now, I’ve been kinda leaving it for her to decide when she wants to talk about it in more depth, if she ever does. I’ll be here for her as soon as she’s ready. It shouldn’t be a big deal, but it super, super is in our current world.
